California Subpoenas OpenAI Over Hugging Face Hack

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued an investigative subpoena to OpenAI as part of a broader inquiry into cybersecurity incidents linked to its AI models.
Bonta’s office said it is asking OpenAI for details about incidents including the hack of AI startup Hugging Face earlier this year, in which OpenAI’s own AI agents accessed parts of the open-source platform’s infrastructure.
“Companies that develop these models have a moral and legal responsibility to ensure they do not perpetrate or enable cyberattacks,” Bonta said in a statement.
The Federal Trade Commission is also running an industry-wide probe into Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI labs over rogue AI agents. A separate coalition of 15 state attorneys general, led by Iowa’s Brenna Bird, is seeking information over the same hack.
Hugging Face agreed in September to be acquired by Nvidia for $12.93 billion. An OpenAI spokesperson said the company looks forward to providing information and has strengthened safeguards across its research systems since the incident.
