SoftBank Completes $30 Billion OpenAI Investment in Full

SoftBank Group said on Thursday it has completed its $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI, paying the third and final $10 billion tranche through Vision Fund 2.
The deal takes SoftBank’s total investment in the ChatGPT maker to $64.6 billion, giving the Japanese conglomerate an ownership interest of about 13 percent.
SoftBank said the final tranche was funded with proceeds from a foreign-currency senior-note sale announced on September 24. It has also cancelled the remaining $10 billion of undrawn capacity under a $40 billion bridge loan set up in March.
The investment comes as part of OpenAI’s latest funding round, which secured $122 billion in commitments earlier this year at an $852 billion valuation, with Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank as the anchor backers.
SoftBank, led by founder Masayoshi Son, is now one of the world’s biggest backers of OpenAI. The company is raising enormous capital to expand data centre capacity and meet growing demand for its AI products.
