GST Collections Hit Rs 2.04 Lakh Crore: What the Record Means

India’s GST collection hit Rs 2,03,521 crore in September, up 14.7 per cent from a year earlier. Here is what the record really means.
The headline number stayed above Rs 2 lakh crore for the third straight month, establishing a new normal for monthly collections. July collected Rs 2.11 lakh crore and August Rs 2.00 lakh crore.
Imports drove the surge: GST revenue from imports jumped 25.9 per cent to Rs 65,525 crore, outpacing the 10.1 per cent rise in domestic collections. Economists say the import surge needs watching, since it could reflect raw materials for stronger manufacturing or just costlier finished goods.
Net collections grew even faster at 18.1 per cent, helped by a 3 per cent fall in refunds. For the April-September half, gross collections reached Rs 12.46 lakh crore, up 11.6 per cent.
What it means: strong GST numbers signal robust consumption and trade ahead of the festive season, and give the government more fiscal room. They also strengthen the case for process reforms the GST Council will discuss on October 7.
Maharashtra remained the top contributor at Rs 29,986 crore, up 15 per cent.
