Indian Markets Shut for Gandhi Jayanti; Trading Resumes Monday

India’s equity, currency and debt markets are closed on Friday for Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday. Trading will resume on Monday, October 5.
The BSE Sensex ended Thursday down 0.79 per cent at 71,909.70, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 0.88 per cent to 22,421.95, according to Reuters.
The benchmarks posted their eighth straight weekly loss, the longest such streak in 25 years, as record foreign selling, crude prices near $100 a barrel and surging global bond yields hurt sentiment.
The rupee ended Thursday at 96.3150 per dollar, its weakest level in two months, as rising US Treasury yields and higher oil prices pressured emerging-market currencies.
The selloff in government bonds deepened as well. The 10-year bond yield rose 3 basis points to 7.2133 per cent, hovering at a two-and-a-half-year high.
With markets shut today, investors will return on Monday to a full week of trading, with global cues from US jobs data and oil prices likely to set the tone.
