Shopify Opens Checkout to Browser-Based AI Agents

Shopify has opened its checkout to browser-based AI agents, TechCrunch reported on September 28.
The company launched WebMCP checkout tools, including get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout, with support for Shop Pay.
Shoppers must authorise the agent before it can complete a purchase. The move lets AI assistants buy products on behalf of users.
It contrasts with Amazon and Adidas, which have blocked shopping agents. Shopify says the tools keep merchants in control.
The company is betting that agent-led shopping will grow fast. Developers can start building with the new tools now.
Retail analysts say checkout is the key battleground for AI commerce. Shopify’s shares were steady after the news.
The WebMCP tools let agents read carts, update items and complete purchases with buyer approval. Shopify said merchants keep full control over the checkout. The company sees agent shopping as a major new channel. Developers can access the tools through Shopify’s developer docs.
