OpenAI Ships GPT-6.1 Sol at One-Fifth of Astra’s Cost

OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Sol, a cheaper coding model priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
That is roughly one-fifth the cost of the flagship GPT-6 Astra. On the DeepSWE benchmark, Sol matched Astra’s performance at a fraction of the price.
The model is available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users in Work and Codex.
OpenAI says Sol is tuned for software engineering tasks. Developers welcomed the lower pricing.
The launch comes a day after OpenAI scrapped the GPT-6.1 Astra release over safety concerns.
Analysts say the move shows OpenAI balancing capability with cost. Sol is expected to power more of the company’s coding tools.
OpenAI said Sol is optimised for code generation and debugging. The model runs in the company’s Work and Codex products. Developers said early tests show strong results on real repositories. The company plans to expand Sol to more tiers. Pricing details were published on OpenAI’s site.
