Pentagon Launches Project Meridian to Review Military AI

The Pentagon has launched Project Meridian, a 120-day review of how the United States military uses artificial intelligence. The order was signed on September 30.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the review. It will examine AI tools across the armed forces, from planning software to autonomous systems.
The review will be co-led by three outside figures: Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich. Their role is to bring private-sector experience to the process.
Officials say the goal is to speed up the adoption of useful AI while cutting tools that do not work. The Pentagon has struggled to turn AI pilots into real systems.
The move reflects the growing race with China and other rivals to field military AI. Both sides see the technology as key to future conflicts.
The review team must deliver its findings within 120 days. Its report could reshape how the US military buys and deploys artificial intelligence.
