EFF launches ‘Opt Out October’ data-privacy guide

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has launched its 2026 Opt Out October guide, urging people to retake control of their data and devices.
The campaign began on Thursday. It walks users through steps to stop companies from collecting their data and using it for advertising and AI training.
The guides show how to tell AI tools they cannot train on your data. They also suggest alternative software, social media platforms and even operating systems with stronger privacy controls.
Last year the foundation offered 22 daily tips to trim data collection. This year’s campaign goes further, aiming to cut data collection off at the source.
The EFF says opting out is not about giving up the internet. It is about finding tools that match your values, even if big companies make switching hard.
Users who complete steps can award themselves a merit badge and share it online. The foundation does not endorse specific products.
