India win maiden Asian Games women’s recurve archery gold

India’s women’s recurve archery team won a historic gold at the Asian Games on Friday, beating South Korea 5-3 in the final.
Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod defeated the dominant South Koreans at Okazaki to clinch India’s first-ever gold in the event. It was India’s first appearance in the final.
The first two sets were tied at 54-54 and 56-56 in windy conditions. Korea faltered in the third set with three straight 8s, and India took it 55-52 to lead 4-2.
In the final set, Korea scored 54. Kirti’s opening 8 was later upgraded to 9, taking India to 54 and sealing the draw India needed.
Seventeen-year-old Kumkum was the star, hitting two crucial 10s in the closing stages. India had beaten China 5-1 in the semifinal earlier.
South Korea had won the women’s recurve team title at every previous Asian Games since the event began in 1978. India had settled for bronze in 2010 and 2022.
