Aadhaar biometric check mandatory for LPG subsidy from October 1

Domestic LPG consumers must now complete biometric Aadhaar authentication to book subsidised refills, under a rule that took effect on October 1.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said 27.43 crore active consumers, or 89.9 per cent, have already completed the process and need take no further action.

Consumers who have not finished the authentication can do it during cylinder delivery through the oil company’s mobile app. They can also visit their distributor’s showroom or use apps like IndianOil ONE, HelloBPCL or HP PAY.

Those unwilling or unable to complete it will still get LPG, but at market price without subsidy, the ministry said.

The move aims to ensure subsidised cooking gas reaches only genuine households. It is meant to stop the diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial use and to remove duplicate or ineligible connections.

Officials said the process is simple and is not meant to deny LPG to any genuine household.
