Weak Monsoon Puts Pressure On Rice Output Ahead Of Festival Season

India’s food economy is entering the festival season under pressure from three forces: a below-normal monsoon, falling rice production and rising seasonal demand.

The southwest monsoon ended about 12.6 percent below average. The USDA has cut India’s rice production estimate to 147 million tonnes for 2026-27, down from 154 million tonnes last season, after paddy acreage fell 16.32 lakh hectares. Government buffer stocks should cushion rice prices in the near term, analysts say.

To improve supplies before peak demand, the government has allowed duty-free imports of one million metric tonnes of raw sugar after domestic prices rose sharply. Food consumption traditionally rises around major festivals, lifting demand for sugar, rice, edible oils and sweets.

IDFC First Bank chief economist Gaura Sengupta has warned that a deficient monsoon could push inflation closer to 5.5 percent if food inflation spikes. Pulses, edible oils and cotton face the sharpest price exposure from the weak rains.
