What happened on the Dubai-Tel Aviv flight: explained

A routine Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a mid-air nightmare on September 30. Here is what is known so far about the incident.

Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX carrying about 174 passengers, was over Saudi Arabia when a co-pilot allegedly stabbed Indian captain Smit Machchhar inside the cockpit.

The aircraft plunged from around 33,000 feet to about 17,000 feet during the struggle. The wounded captain helped unlock the cockpit door.

Passengers, including an Israeli plumber named Yaniv Hayun, and crew members stormed in and overpowered the attacker. They helped stabilise the aircraft.

It diverted safely to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Israel scrambled fighter jets after emergency signals raised hijacking fears. The captain was reported stable after surgery.

Israel’s Prime Minister praised the intervening passengers. The UAE is investigating the motive and any terror link, while the co-pilot was arrested in Saudi Arabia. The co-pilot was arrested by Saudi authorities after the aircraft landed. Flydubai suspended its Israel flights amid the investigation.
