Bangladesh floods: at least 51 dead, over a million affected

Floods sweeping across Bangladesh have killed at least 51 people and left more than a million residents affected, according to the country’s disaster management ministry.
The ministry said 39 people were injured, 1,022,963 people were affected across the flood-hit regions, 267,918 families were marooned by the waters, and 44,457 people had taken shelter in relief centres, according to reports.
Oxfam has put the toll at nearly 60 dead and more than 44,000 displaced, with 1.1 million people affected overall. The worst-hit areas include Chattogram, while flooding has also reached Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, raising fears of disease and sanitation crises.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed government agencies on Sunday to intensify rescue and relief operations in the affected districts, according to reports.
Relief officials say the floods, driven by heavy seasonal rainfall, have damaged homes, crops and roads across the affected areas. Aid agencies are distributing food, clean water and medical supplies while continuing rescue operations in marooned communities.
