ICC World Cup 2027 format explained: Super Series, Super 7

The 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will use a brand-new format with a Super Series and a Super 7. Here is how it works.
Stage 1: Super Series. The three lowest-ranked of the 14 qualified teams play a round-robin. Only the winner advances; the other two go home.
Stage 2: Group stage. Twelve teams are split into two groups of six, playing five matches each (30 games total). The top three from each group plus the best fourth-placed team across both groups move on — seven teams in all.
Stage 3: Super 7. The seven qualifiers play a round-robin of 21 matches. The top four reach the semifinals, followed by the final.
Why the change? The ICC announced the format in July 2026 to “enhance consequence” in early games after concerns about dead rubbers at recent tournaments. It also guarantees India and Pakistan can meet at least twice.
The tournament runs from October 4 to November 21, 2027, with 57 matches in all. Australia are the defending champions.
