Google appeals EU orders on search data and Android AI

Google has filed two appeals against European Union regulatory orders covering search-data sharing and AI interoperability on Android, the company confirmed.

The appeals, lodged with the EU General Court in Luxembourg on September 28 and 29, challenge two Digital Markets Act decisions. One requires Google to share search data with rivals from January 2027. The other demands 11 AI interoperability features on Android 18 by August 2027 and hotword access by 2028.

Google executive Oliver Bethell said the orders would cause “irreversible harm” to user privacy and product quality. DuckDuckGo has backed the EU’s approach, saying rivals need access to search data to compete fairly.

The DMA allows fines of up to 10 per cent of global turnover for non-compliance. Google is already fighting other EU decisions, including a record antitrust fine over its ad-tech business.

The cases are expected to run for years. They form part of a wider global battle over how much control big tech platforms must give rivals and how far regulators can go in redesigning core products.
