The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a Rs 1,789.52-crore Intelligent Traffic Management System for the Delhi Police.

The ITMS will cover 42 identified traffic corridors in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operations and maintenance. It will feature adaptive traffic signals, real-time data collection, automated enforcement and an integrated command-and-control centre.

Briefing the media, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the system would replace the current fixed-timer signals — all 1,529 signals in the capital currently run on fixed timers — with adaptive signals that respond to traffic flow.

The project also includes green corridors for ambulances and emergency vehicles, using real-time traffic management.

Officials said the upgrade would improve commute times, reduce congestion and bring Delhi’s traffic management in line with global standards.

The project is expected to be implemented by the Delhi Police in coordination with the transport department and civic agencies over the next two years.
