Around 20 Congress workers have been booked under attempt-to-murder and other serious charges after a protest in Agra during which Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s residence was allegedly defaced.

The FIR, registered at Hariparvat police station on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Gaurav Gupta, names eight Congress leaders and 15 to 20 unidentified workers. They have been booked under BNS Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 121, 126, 132, 191, 333, 351(2) and 352.

The protest on Monday saw party workers gather outside the CEC’s Vijay Nagar residence, where black paint was thrown and slogans such as “Gyanesh Gaddar” and “Vote Chor” were raised.

Six Congress leaders — Anil Yadav, Mukesh Dhangar, Manoj Gaur, Rajesh Kumar, Raja Gautam and Pankaj Chaudhary — were arrested and sent to jail on Tuesday.

City Congress president Amit Singh called the sections “false” and said the party would fight the case legally. The protest was part of the party’s statewide agitation over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
