Trump-Xi Summit Extends Trade Truce, Launches AI Dialogue

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on September 24 and agreed to extend their trade truce to January 10, 2027, easing fears of a fresh tariff war.

The two sides also agreed on $60 billion in tariff-treatment recommendations — $30 billion each way — and launched a new US-China Super Intelligence Dialogue, with the first exchange due by November 2026.

On Taiwan, Xi urged “prudence”, while the two leaders discussed the agenda for the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 in Miami in December.

The summit, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, was the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since Trump’s return to office.

Trade between the world’s two largest economies has been under strain from tariffs, export controls and disputes over technology and Taiwan.

Analysts said the truce extension gives businesses breathing room, but warned that deep differences over technology, Taiwan and trade imbalances remain unresolved.
