An Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others injured in a militant ambush in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Monday morning.

The attack took place around 6:30 am near Nampong Nallah when an Assam Rifles patrol came under fire. Havildar Jankhokai Kuki, 42, died in the ambush, officials said. The four injured personnel are being treated at a military hospital.

Security forces suspect the involvement of the NSCN(K-YA) faction, which remains active in the region bordering Myanmar.

Following the attack, the Pangsau Border Haat — a weekly market on the India-Myanmar border — was suspended from September 30. It is expected to resume on October 10.

Reinforcements have been rushed to the area and a search operation is underway to track down the attackers. Officials said combing operations would continue in the coming days.

Changlang is part of the Tirap-Changlang-Longding belt where several insurgent groups operate. The area has seen sporadic violence despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations by security forces.
