US Senators Bernie Moreno and Elissa Slotkin are pushing for Senate passage of a bipartisan bill that would permanently ban Chinese-made connected vehicles from the American market.

The Connected Vehicle Security Act of 2026, introduced in April, would prohibit the import, manufacture, sale and resale of connected vehicles and related software and hardware tied to China and other foreign adversaries. The restrictions would be phased in, with software rules from 2027 and hardware from 2030.

Moreno and Slotkin had planned to pass the bill by unanimous consent on September 24 but delayed the move to address concerns from Senator Rand Paul, the lone holdout. The bill has more than 50 Senate cosponsors and a House version with over 100.

Slotkin has called Chinese connected cars surveillance packages on wheels, warning they could collect data on Americans. China strongly opposes the ban. The push came as President Trump met China's Xi Jinping in Washington to discuss trade issues.
