Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on September 30 that Israel's enemies may try to attack the country ahead of next month's general election, sparking a sharp political row.

In a video filmed at an air force base in front of a fighter jet, Netanyahu said there were indications that enemies will try to attack us ahead of the elections. He did not name any specific group, though in recent weeks he has threatened Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Palestinian Authority with retaliation.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid accused Netanyahu of fear-mongering and demanded an urgent security briefing. After meeting the prime minister on Tuesday night, Lapid said the elections will take place on time and that there is no reason to panic the public.

Lapid also criticised Netanyahu for using a military base as a prop for an election video. The dispute comes as Israel heads to its first general election since the October 2023 attacks, a vote that will decide Netanyahu's political future.
