Russia carried out one of its heaviest overnight attacks on Kyiv on September 28, killing at least 9 people and injuring more than 80, according to reports.

Around 120 drones were launched at the Ukrainian capital in the overnight assault, including jet-powered drones, overwhelming air defences. Explosions were reported across the city as debris from intercepted drones fell on residential areas.

Emergency services worked through the night to rescue people trapped in damaged buildings. The attack damaged homes and infrastructure, with fires breaking out at several sites.

The strikes mark a sharp escalation in Russia’s aerial campaign against Ukrainian cities, coming amid continued fighting along the front lines. Ukrainian officials said air defences intercepted a large share of the incoming drones but could not stop all of them.

International reactions were awaited as the scale of the damage became clear in the morning. The attack is among the deadliest on the capital in recent months and underlines the continuing civilian toll of the war, now well into its fourth year.
