Nepal was hit by a fresh wave of deadly floods and landslides in the last week of September 2026, weeks after catastrophic August flash floods. Here is what we know so far.

What happened? Heavy monsoon rain from September 24 to 27 triggered landslides and floods across several districts. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority says at least 27 people were killed over recent days, with 21 deaths between September 24 and 27 alone. In Baglung district, 10 people died and one remains missing.

The dramatic video. A two-storey municipal ward office in Galkot, Baglung, was caught on camera sliding into the swollen Daram River on September 27. Officials had removed documents and computers beforehand, and no one was hurt.

Why it matters beyond Nepal. The August 26 Bhotekoshi flash floods and the September rains damaged hydropower plants, cutting about 640 MW of generation. Nepal, which normally exports surplus power to India in the wet season, now plans to import up to 1.1 GW from India this winter to avoid blackouts.
