Israel has killed the head of Hamas’s armed wing in northern Gaza in an overnight airstrike, in the latest targeted killing of the group’s leadership. The strike hit an apartment building in Gaza City’s Nasr neighbourhood at dawn on September 29.

Izz al-Din Al-Beik, a commander in Hamas’s al-Qassam Brigades, was killed along with another person, according to reports. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the operation. Hamas also confirmed Al-Beik’s death, describing him as a member of its General Military Council and a commander in the operations room during the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel.

Israel said Al-Beik had planned attacks and recruited militants. The Israeli military says it has killed at least 20 Hamas figures this month alone.

Gaza health officials say at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed since a ceasefire took effect. Six people were reported killed in separate incidents across Gaza on Monday, including three in drone strikes in Jabalia.
