India’s 100 GW Nuclear Target by 2047, Explained
India wants to grow its nuclear power capacity from under 9 gigawatts today to 100 GW by 2047. The target is ambitious: the country would need to add nearly 4 GW every year for two decades.
Today, India runs 24 reactors with 8.78 GW of capacity, about 3 per cent of its electricity. Nine more units totalling 7.5 GW are under construction. Ten indigenous reactors have been approved in fleet mode, and two fast breeder reactors are in the pipeline.
The policy push is strong. The Nuclear Energy Mission has set aside Rs 20,000 crore for small modular reactors, with five homegrown SMRs planned by 2033. The SHANTI Act of 2025 opened the sector to private companies for the first time.
Industry voices are upbeat. Bajaj Energy’s Sunita Kumar said India could even exceed the target if private players join in, with NPCIL, NTPC and private firms lining up over 100 GW of plans. The big tests: money, fuel supply and building reactors on time.
