Bulgarian businessman Iliyan Filipov was shot dead in the city of Plovdiv, in a killing that has shocked the country. Police said the 58-year-old was attacked outside his home in the evening by an unknown gunman.

Filipov was a well-known figure in local business circles. He ran several companies in the region and was known for his charity work. Neighbours described hearing gunshots and seeing a car speed away from the scene.

Police have launched a murder investigation and are reviewing security camera footage. No arrests have been made so far. Authorities have not named a motive, but contract killings linked to business disputes have occurred in Bulgaria in the past.

The killing has renewed debate about organised crime in the country. Opposition politicians called for a full investigation and stronger action against criminal networks. Police said they are following several leads. Filipov’s family has asked for privacy as the investigation continues. A funeral is expected to be held in Plovdiv later this week.
