Iran and Qatar Discuss Reopening Strait of Hormuz

Iran's foreign minister has discussed the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz with Qatari mediators, according to reports on 29 September.

The strait is one of the world's most important oil shipping routes. Any threat to traffic through it sends crude prices higher and rattles global markets, since a large share of the world's seaborne crude passes through it.

The talks come after the United States rejected an Iranian proposal linked to the strait earlier this week. Washington has kept up pressure on Tehran over its nuclear programme and regional activities.

Qatar has often played mediator between Iran and Western powers. Whether the latest contacts lead to any easing of tensions remains unclear, though Qatar has hosted such talks in the past.

Oil prices often jump on Hormuz headlines because a large share of the world's seaborne crude passes through it. Traders will watch the next round of contacts for any sign of de-escalation.
