Hundreds of Delhi University students marched through the North Campus on September 28, demanding safer public spaces for women. The women-led march, named “Hum Auratein Aazaad Hain”, began at Miranda House and ended near the Faculty of Arts.

The protest was held in solidarity with the 17-year-old survivor of a gang rape at Aastha Kunj Park in Kalkaji on September 21. Students demanded better street lighting, more frequent DTC shuttle buses, public toilets and discounted metro tickets.

The marchers opposed measures that restrict women’s movement, such as hostel curfews. Their posters read: “Thank you for online classes, we’d prefer safe roads.”

The same day, the Supreme Court called recent rape cases in Delhi a “failure of law enforcement” and ordered accountability. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has acknowledged lapses, and police say patrolling has been stepped up.

The march was open to women and gender minorities. Students said they also plan to draft a ‘Charter of Demands for Delhi Citizens’, with consultations to be held near Gargi College and Kamala Nehru College in the coming days.
