DHS accused of using border funds for TV ads

The Trump administration is facing accusations of diverting border and homeland security funds to pay for taxpayer-funded television advertisements. The Wall Street Journal first reported that the Department of Homeland Security used funds earmarked for border security on a campaign-style ad blitz.
According to USA Today, DHS has spent about $200 million on the ads, including spots under a 'defend the homeland' theme. Senate Democrats have alleged misappropriation of appropriated funds, arguing that money approved by Congress for border operations was redirected without authorisation.
Republican aides have countered that the border is secure and the ads are a legitimate part of the department's mission. The dispute adds to the charged atmosphere around immigration spending ahead of the midterm elections, with Democrats promising closer scrutiny of how DHS allocates its budget if they regain congressional power. Legal experts say the outcome could hinge on whether the spending fell within the department's statutory authority, a question Congress may revisit during upcoming appropriations hearings.
