Republican Senator Mike Lee on September 29 blocked a fast-track Senate vote on legislation aimed at curbing President Trump’s planned overhaul of the Kennedy Center.

Lee objected to a unanimous-consent request for Senator Jeff Merkley’s Protecting Presidential Memorials Act, which would restrict the president’s ability to reshape the national performing arts centre.

The objection does not kill the bill. It can still advance through the Senate’s normal process, which requires debate and a full vote rather than instant passage.

Trump’s plans for the Kennedy Center, including reported ambitions to rename it, have drawn fierce opposition from Democrats and arts advocates who see the venue as a non-partisan national institution.
