OpenAI unveiled Dots on September 29 at its DevDay 2026 event in San Francisco, a new class of always-on AI agents that keep working for users around the clock.

Unlike a normal ChatGPT conversation that waits for a prompt, a Dot continues independently. Each Dot runs on its own cloud computer and browser, powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s most capable model. It can research, analyse data, write code and draft documents on its own.

Dots connect to more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI’s ecosystem, allowing work that spans multiple services rather than being limited to information inside ChatGPT.

At launch, Dots work only inside ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users, with Slack and Microsoft Teams messaging already available and voice support planned. Users can name their Dot and set custom approval rules.

OpenAI also announced Spaces, collaborative software with evolving documents. The launch comes a day after the company shelved GPT-6.1 Astra over safety concerns, though Dots run on the earlier GPT-6 Astra model.
