Maharashtra's Food and Drug Administration has seized more than 50 tonnes of food stock in a festive-season crackdown across the state.

The agency seized 50,601.78 kg of food items worth about 1.19 crore rupees. It also suspended the licences or registrations of 30 food establishments over hygiene lapses.

Thirteen of the 30 outlets are in Mumbai. Reports say Mumbai's iconic Kyani Cafe was among those flagged, with inspectors finding rat droppings and blood in a fridge. These are allegations made by the inspection teams.

Festive seasons see a sharp rise in demand for sweets, snacks and dairy products. Officials say some sellers cut corners on quality and hygiene during this period.

The FDA has asked consumers to check labels and buy from trusted shops. It has also set up helplines for complaints about adulterated food.

The crackdown will continue through the festive season. Officials said repeat offenders could face stricter action, including permanent closure.
