Reliance Jio added nearly 2.4 million wireless subscribers in August, the most of any Indian operator, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Jio’s base rose to 508.43 million from 506.03 million in July.

Bharti Airtel was close behind with about 2.11 million additions, taking its base to 491.60 million from 489.49 million. The gap of roughly 300,000 additions shows how tightly the two rivals are competing for growth.

Vodafone Idea added about 506,000 subscribers and state-run BSNL gained nearly 493,000. MTNL was the only major operator to lose users, shedding about 5,900 connections.

India’s total wireless base grew 0.46 percent to 1,312.25 million. Urban subscriptions grew 0.70 percent while rural growth was 0.13 percent. Private operators now hold 92.75 percent of the market.

Airtel retained the highest share of active users, with 99.01 percent of its base active on TRAI’s visitor location register measure. The data was released on September 28.
