ECI Orders Special Drive to Enrol Voters Left Out in SIR
The Election Commission has ordered a special enrolment drive for voters left out during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The decision was taken at a full commission meeting on September 26.
SIR has been completed in 20 states and union territories, including Bihar and West Bengal. Anyone whose name was left out, along with young and first-time voters, can apply to the local Electoral Registration Officer.
Booth Level Officers will visit the homes of voters who got notices for being ‘unmapped’ or having logical discrepancies. Documents will be uploaded on ECINet, and hearings will be held only in rare cases, preferably online.
The commission also formed a committee to review ECINet and extended deadlines in Delhi and Maharashtra for filing claims and objections.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, TMC, DMK and Samajwadi Party, have questioned the SIR exercise and the role of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The commission says all decisions were unanimous and upheld by the Supreme Court.
