Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Launches 1-Gram Gold Ring Scheme

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has launched the ‘Thai Maman Thanga Mothiram’ scheme, under which eligible women will receive a one-gram gold ring, with the rollout beginning around September 28.
The scheme’s name roughly translates to a gold ring from a mother’s brother, a nod to Tamil wedding customs where maternal uncles gift jewellery. Officials said eligibility rules cover income and family criteria, with applications through designated channels.
Reports said Kalyan Jewellers is supplying the one-gram gold rings for the programme. The launch drew large public interest, with details on who qualifies and how to apply widely shared.
The gold-ring scheme is among the welfare promises Vijay’s government has pushed since taking office, aimed at women from economically weaker sections. Critics of such giveaways question the fiscal cost; supporters call it direct help to poor households.
Officials advised applicants to check the official eligibility list and beware of fraudsters seeking money for enrolment.
