Obsession’s India run decoded: 12x opening weekend

Obsession’s India distributor Denzil Dias has revealed how the Hollywood horror film became a sleeper hit. The film eventually did 12 times its opening weekend in India.
Dias said the team delayed the India release by two weeks after the US opening. They also clashed with the IPL season on purpose.
The film opened on just 300 screens in week one. Word of mouth then drove strong growth in the following weeks.
Obsession, directed by Curry Barker, released in India on May 29. It has collected close to Rs 40 crore net in the country.
Dias said waiting for international buzz to travel to India was the key call. The strategy turned a small release into one of the year’s biggest Hollywood hits here. The film’s success has encouraged more Hollywood studios to try creative release plans in India. Trade experts called it a case study in patience. Box office trackers said the film crossed Rs 39 crore net in India.
