Foundation Laid For Rs 2,300-Crore E-Methanol Plant At Kandla
The foundation stone for India’s first port-based e-methanol plant was laid on Friday at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, in a project worth Rs 2,300 crore.
The plant is a joint venture between the Deendayal Port Authority and Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited in a 76:24 ratio, and will have a capacity of 150 tonnes per day.
The foundation stone was laid by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The project will be built in two phases: a 50-tonne-per-day unit by January 2027 at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore, followed by an additional 100 tonnes per day by March 2027 at Rs 1,100 crore. The plant is expected to create over 3,500 direct and indirect jobs.
Officials said the e-methanol produced at Kandla would cost around $750 per tonne, far below the global price of about $1,300, giving India a competitive edge in green fuel for shipping.
