The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of three high court chief justices to the apex court. At its meeting on 28 September 2026, the Collegium recommended Justice Sunita Agarwal, Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court; Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court; and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.

The recommendations will now go to the Union government for approval and formal appointment. If appointed, the three judges will fill vacancies in the Supreme Court and strengthen its working strength.

The Collegium system, under which the five senior-most judges of the Supreme Court recommend appointments, has been the subject of periodic debate about transparency. The latest recommendations follow the established practice of drawing from among serving chief justices of high courts. The elevation of Justice Agarwal would also be watched for its impact on the representation of women judges in the higher judiciary. The appointments take effect once the government issues the warrants of appointment.
