Priya Ghanghas assured India a boxing medal at the Asian Games on Monday. The 20-year-old from Haryana beat Tajikistan’s Mijgona Samadova 5-0 in the women’s 60kg quarterfinal at the Nishio Gymnasium.

Priya lost the first round 2-3. She then took charge and won the next two rounds 5-0 each. Samadova was penalised in the second round. Three judges scored it 29-27 and two scored it 30-26 in Priya’s favour.

Priya is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion. She also holds the Asian Elite Championships gold. Earlier in the Games, she beat Korean Olympian and two-time world medallist Oh Yeon-ji 5-0.

She will face China’s Yang Chengyu in the semifinal on Wednesday. Yang is the 2023 world champion and a 2025 Worlds bronze medallist.

It is India’s fifth confirmed boxing medal at the Games. Lovlina Borgohain and Kapil Pokhariya also assured medals on Monday.

Priya said she stayed calm after losing the first round. Her coaches told her to stick to the plan. A win on Wednesday would take her into the gold-medal bout.
