J&K Assembly passes statehood resolution amid BJP walkout
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday passed a resolution seeking the immediate restoration of full statehood. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved it on September 25 as Leader of the House.
The resolution calls on the Government of India to restore statehood at the earliest. It will be forwarded to the Centre. The House passed it by voice vote.
BJP legislators protested during the debate. They objected to references to the 2000 autonomy report and the pre-Article 370 status of the region. They entered the well of the House, raised slogans and later walked out.
Abdullah said asking for statehood was not anti-national. He said the demand was only for statehood and not for the return of Article 370. He mocked the Centre’s timeline, asking in which dictionary “as soon as possible” means two years.
The resolution is not binding on the Centre. Jammu and Kashmir has been a Union Territory since the August 2019 reorganisation.
