FPIs pull out Rs 17,131 crore from equities in September

Foreign portfolio investors sold around Rs 17,131 crore worth of Indian equities so far in September. The data comes from NSDL.
This takes their net selling for 2026 to around Rs 2.41 lakh crore. The selling marks a sharp reversal.
FPIs were net buyers in July and August. They bought Rs 20,200 crore in July and Rs 29,630 crore in August, according to CDSL data.
Three factors are driving the outflow. Brent crude prices are surging. US bond yields are rising, with the 10-year yield at 5%.
There is also the risk of a US-Iran conflict over the Strait of Hormuz. This has added to global uncertainty. NSDL tracks the daily FPI flows into Indian equities.
The withdrawal has put pressure on Indian markets through September. CDSL data had shown net buying in July and August. That trend has now reversed.
Analysts are watching crude prices and bond yields for cues on where flows head next.
