Nine states use new House maps after Trump-led redraw

Nine states are using new US House districts for November’s midterm elections after a mid-decade redistricting push set off by President Donald Trump, the Associated Press reported.

The states — Alabama, California, Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Utah — adopted new maps after Trump urged Republicans in July 2025 to redraw lines. Texas moved first; Democratic-led California responded with maps meant to offset potential GOP gains, and several Southern states joined after a Supreme Court ruling in April weakened Voting Rights Act protections for minority-heavy districts.

All the new maps favour Republicans except in California and Utah, where they could help Democrats. If the districts play out as designed, Republicans could net up to nine additional seats, though a strong Democratic year could cut that tally.

About one in 10 potential voters nationwide are now in different congressional districts than in 2024, including more than 6.9 million in Texas, 6.3 million in California and 4.5 million in Florida.

A Supreme Court ruling on Friday settled Missouri’s map dispute: the state must use its 2024 lines, not a Trump-backed redraw. November ballot issues in Maryland and Missouri could still bring more changes before 2028.
