China cuts tariffs on US farm goods, but not soybeans

China has cut tariffs on a range of American farm goods but left soybeans out of the relief, reports said on Monday, in a selective easing of trade duties.

The reductions cover products such as wheat, corn, sorghum, cotton, chicken and pork, lowering duties that Beijing imposed during the long-running trade dispute.

Soybeans, by far the biggest US agricultural export to China, were notably excluded, keeping pressure on American farmers who depend on the Chinese market.

The move was reported by Reuters and comes as both countries continue to manage a fragile trade truce alongside wider tensions. Trade officials on both sides have been working to stabilise the economic relationship.

Analysts said the selective cuts suggested Beijing was offering limited goodwill while keeping its most powerful leverage in reserve. US farm groups welcomed the relief but urged China to go further and include soybeans, which account for the bulk of American farm exports to China.
