Giants trade for Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy after Dart injury
The New York Giants have traded for quarterback J.J. McCarthy, sending a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings.
The deal, announced on September 28, comes a week after Giants starter Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury. Veteran Jameis Winston has struggled in relief.
McCarthy, 23, was the tenth overall pick in the 2024 draft but fell to third on Minnesota’s depth chart behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz. He missed his rookie year with a knee injury and went 6-4 as a starter in 2025.
Coach John Harbaugh — brother of McCarthy’s college coach Jim Harbaugh — said Winston would remain the starter for now.
For the 3-0 Vikings, the trade closes the book on a brief era. For McCarthy, it is a fresh start with a team desperate for quarterback stability.
