Google will end software updates for Chromebooks in mid-2034, according to the company’s support page. Management capabilities for Enterprise and Education customers will remain in place through the cutoff.

Many of the newest Chromebook models will be eligible to transition to Googlebook OS, the new system that merges Android and ChromeOS. Google says details on device eligibility are coming soon. The 2034 phase-out date first surfaced in court filings during Google’s search antitrust case.

Googlebook devices from five major hardware makers are already on sale, with pre-orders open since September 21, 2026. Management tools for the new platform are planned for the second half of 2027, giving schools and businesses time to plan their transition.

The change ends an era for ChromeOS, which powered Google’s push into classrooms over the past decade. Google is betting that a unified Android-based system will serve both consumer and education markets better than maintaining two separate operating systems.
