Eight Marines Hurt in Undisclosed Iranian Strike, NBC Says

An Iranian anti-ship cruise missile struck a maritime vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on September 14, injuring eight US Marines, NBC News reported on September 28, citing three US officials. The Pentagon had not publicly disclosed the attack.

The eight injured, seven enlisted Marines and one officer serving as a battalion landing team, suffered smoke inhalation and concussion-like symptoms with possible traumatic brain injuries, according to the officials. None was seriously hurt and all returned to duty shortly after.

Officials said the vessel hit was not a commissioned US Navy warship and declined to identify its class or flag. US Central Command declined to comment on the report.

The injuries entered the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System nearly 10 days after the strike. A defense official blamed latent symptoms and a casualty-tracking system that lacks real-time reporting. The database listed 861 US service members wounded in the wider Iran conflict as of September 23, while the Joint Maritime Information Center’s September 27 advisory still rates the Hormuz threat as severe.
