The combined death toll from two weekend mass shootings in South Africa rose to 28 on September 28 after another victim died in hospital, according to officials. No arrests have been made in either attack, which took place hours apart in different provinces.

In the first attack, gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles stormed a tavern in Wedela township near Johannesburg on Saturday night, killing 18 people and wounding several others. The attackers fled in two vehicles and set two cars on fire before escaping.

About four hours later, a second shooting left 10 dead and 11 wounded at a store linked to an entertainment venue in Lwandle township near Cape Town. Police said the gunmen searched and took victims’ phones during the attack.

Specialist detectives and the defense force are investigating both incidents. The shootings underline South Africa’s persistent violent-crime crisis. The country records roughly 60 murders a day, a rate that continues to strain policing resources and public confidence in the criminal justice system.
