Roma’s long-dreamed new stadium has received final approval, with construction set to begin in the spring of 2027.

The Stadio della Roma project at Pietralata, valued at around 1 billion euros, cleared its last bureaucratic hurdle on September 28. The club announced the green light after years of false starts and political wrangling.

The new arena is expected to be ready in time for Euro 2032, which Italy will co-host, giving Rome a modern football cathedral to replace the ageing Stadio Olimpico that Roma share with Lazio.

For Roma supporters, the approval ends decades of waiting. Club officials called it a historic day, while city leaders framed the stadium as a driver of jobs and regeneration for the Pietralata district.

The Olimpico’s future is now uncertain, with Lazio potentially left as sole tenants. Roma’s American owners have pushed the project for years, seeing a club-owned stadium as key to competing with Europe’s elite.
