Taxpayer-Funded Trump Ads Draw Ethics Fire

Television ads promoting President Donald Trump that aired during NFL broadcasts over the weekend are drawing bipartisan criticism because they carry the tagline “Paid for by the U.S. Government.”
Former Bush White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter told the New York Times the taxpayer-funded spots could be “an impeachable offense,” writing that the president has “no right to use taxpayer money for campaign ads” and that Congress has barred government-sponsored political propaganda. The ads feature Trump vowing to “defeat communism, socialism and Marxism in America.”
Republican Senator John Kennedy said on CBS that no public official should spend public money on private ads for themselves. The White House defended the spots as “public service announcements,” arguing Trump is not on the ballot and there is no call to action.
The fight comes about five weeks before the midterms, with Republicans battling to keep control of Congress. The administration insists the ads are patriotic reminders, while critics call them campaign spots paid for by taxpayers.
