Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal will visit the United States from September 29 to October 5 for talks aimed at advancing a bilateral trade deal, the Commerce Ministry said on Monday.

He will meet US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during the visit. Goyal will also attend the G20 Trade Ministers’ meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on September 30 and October 1, at Greer’s invitation.

The ministry said the two sides will work to advance a balanced India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement and finalise an interim deal, in line with the joint statement of February 7, 2026. India has been holding out for a better deal after months of talks.

The visit comes amid fresh tension over US legislation that would allow 100 per cent tariffs on major buyers of Russian oil. New Delhi has warned Washington that such measures could harm bilateral ties.

Goyal will also meet industry leaders and investors in Chicago and New York. Why it matters: the US is India’s largest trading partner, and an interim deal would bring relief to exporters facing tariff uncertainty.
